Greece received four ex-USCG Island-class Cutters transferred via the Defense Security Cooperation Agency’s Office of International Acquisition’s Excess Defense Articles Program (EDA). Island-class vessels were USCG Cutters, designed to operate and survive through sea state five conditions while meeting NAVSEA standards for two compartment damaged stability. Bollinger Shipyards built them in Lockport, La. USA, based on a semi displacement round bilge design by Vosper-Thorneycroft.
All ships were rebuilt and upgraded at Salamis Shipyards in Greece according to Hellenic Navy requirements. They will replace some older patrol boats from the Norwegian-built Nasty-class and from the French-built Antoniou-class. Their steel hull has a length of 34 meters, beam of 6,4 meters and displacement of 168 GT. Their twin diesel engine propulsion systems allow a top speed of 28 to 30 knots with a range of 3,380 nm at a cruising speed of 8 knots.
Aegean Electronics completed engineering and commissioning services for Harbor Acceptance Test (HAT) & Sea Acceptance Test (SAT) of type approved heading control systems.
