Radar Video Merge with SST Transceivers

Anschütz offers a unique, patented Radar Video Merge (RVM) which delivers a seamless and unobstructed 360° radar video with an unparalleled flexibility and maximum performance for safe navigation.

Modern vessels face increasingly complex navigational challenges. From Offshore Supply Vessels (OSV) to Cruise Liners and Mega-yachts, complex superstructure layouts with cranes, helicopter pads and funnels often create blind spots that compromise radar coverage. At the same time, smaller craft without Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) remain invisible to conventional systems, increasing collision risk in congested waters or adverse conditions.

To address these challenges, Anschütz has developed a patented RVM solution for their SYNAPSIS Radar NX systems. The Anschütz RVM combines multiple radar video streams from the same type of transceivers into one seamless, 360° situational picture. Unlike conventional solutions that simply stitch radar images together, RVM uses advanced algorithms for paraxial error correction, pulse synchronization and clutter suppression. The result is a unified radar video with consistent reference points and enhanced target tracking across all sensors. This virtual radar transceiver is available throughout the navigation network, ensuring every bridge workstation benefits from the same complete view.

Now with SST radar performance

RVM is no longer limited to magnetron-based radars. Anschütz now offers this capability with its latest Solid-State Transceiver (SST) radar sensors, a major step forward in reliability and lifecycle efficiency.

The Anschütz SST, available in X- and S-band with antenna sizes from 5ft to 14ft, eliminates the magnetron, reducing maintenance and operating costs while extending service life. Its fully coherent design and digital signal processing enable high-fidelity raw radar video distribution via Ethernet, simplifying installation and integration

Combined with the Anschütz SYNAPSIS radar software, SST sensors deliver exceptional detection and tracking performance, supported by patented anti-clutter and filtering technologies. Integration via LAN removes the need for coaxial cabling and dedicated inter-switch units, reducing complexity and cost while offering maximum flexibility for future upgrades, from standalone radar installations to fully integrated bridge systems.

Navigational safety and operational efficiency

For operators of high-value vessels, whether Cruise Liners, Ferries or Research Vessels, the benefits are clear:

  • Unmatched situational awareness: true 360° radar coverage without blind spots
  • Superior target management: seamless tracking across multiple sensors
  • Future-proof integration: scalable from radar refit to integrated bridge
  • Low lifecycle costs: no magnetron, less maintenance, longer service life

Using RVM with SST technology, Anschütz sets a new benchmark for navigational safety and operational efficiency.

Application software upgrade

The patented Video Merging is available as an add-on to the Radar NX application from software version Synapsis E04.04. A separate Small Marine Computer serves as radar server on the bridge.

The Video Merging can be activated on the inter-switch page of the Radar NX menu. Besides the physical radar transceivers, the new “virtual transceiver” can be selected. For the operator there will be no difference whether using a physical radar or the virtual transceiver, except from a much-improved situational overview.

Main Features of Anschütz RVM

  • Combines navigation radars of the same frequency range (if required, at different antenna speed) to a new 360° radar without blind sectors.
  • Enables flexible use of the radar video merge at any workstation at any time.
  • Easy to add as an upgrade to Anschütz Radar NX systems featuring Anschütz SST or NSX radar sensors.
  • Can also be used within the radar overlay feature on ECDIS NX (requires the respective add-on).

Video merging for Anschütz SST radars delivers unparalleled situational awareness for safe navigation and operations.
