Simrad released s.v.22.1 for fishery sonars

A new software (v.22.1) for the latest Processor Unit of Simrad Sonars has been released. The updated Processor Unit software is controlling all functionality, Tx/Rx, interfacing with external peripherals and sensors, plus offering a modernized and simplified user interface. A lot of new functions and improvements are introduced with this latest software for all the Simrad omni sonars (CS, SY, SX, SU, ST-series) and the SN90 matrix sonar. The following specific changes have been made with this latest update:

The User Settings Setup page is established to offer generic settings that do not naturally belong elsewhere. Not available in Replay mode.

  • User Settings, users may save the current selection of operational parameters. Range, bearing and tilt may also be saved.
  • New Manually Initiated Track, users may select if any new track will be a priority target.

The Units page allows the selection of different measurement units used to work within various presentations. Some of them require external sensor data to be input. Selections may be performed on the below categories:

  • Length
  • Depth
  • Distance
  • Position
  • Speed
  • Temperature
  • Fish Length

The New Marker dialog box allows the creation of a new marker based on the known depth and geographical position of targets such as wrecks, obstacles, reefs, etc. These data usually originate from an external source and are:

  • Latitude
  • Longitude
  • Depth
  • Position Input Format

The Operating Panel page allows users to select the Panel type which is used in the system. The Operating Panel Mk2 is connected to the system with an Ethernet cable and the Operating Panel Mk3 is connected to the system with a USB cable. Furthermore, various functions can be assigned to dedicated buttons and switches of these Panels.

The Display Options dialog box is used to specify basic settings for the sonar presentation. The General page in the Display Options dialog box controls the location of the menu. Users can also select which navigational information to be shown on the top bar plus the presentation of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) at the bottom of the presentation. A range of “on/off switches” is offered and can be used to enable or disable the relevant functions.

For the CS, SX, SU, ST-series Omni sonars, and the SN90 Matrix sonar the following improvements are also available:

  • The performance stability issue relating to “stop due to ping timeout” which was reported by some users of s.v.21.13.21 was fixed.
  • The roll & pitch offset values follow the rotation (if it has any) of the motion sensor.
  • The presentation of water current layers is updated to show the speed with decimals.

All sonars’ end-user manuals have been updated corresponding to this latest software release. Moreover, all sonar Processor Units updated to this latest software include the corresponding Reference Manual of each system, accessible as context-sensitive online help.

It should be noted that a firmware update for the Transceiver Unit is not included with this new software release. However, all the above changes improve operational presentations, ergonomics, and functionality. So, it is recommended that all Simrad omni sonar users update their software to this latest version.

Simrad sonars offer short- and long-range performance optimized for fishery and underwater scientific applications by using advanced wideband transducer design combined with digital transmitting and receiving technology. A frequency modulated signal with special filters enhances fish detection and definition under difficult conditions. The narrow beam opening angles combined with high source levels extend the detection range while keeping resolution high.
