Simrad’s sustainability strategy

Simrad helps you find the fish, BioBase ensures there are more fish to find!

As a direct result of human activity, the world’s oceans are in significant danger. The World Wildlife Fund reports a 50% decline in the number of fish from 1970 due to over-exploitation and habitat loss. Further, the world’s oceans have become 30% more acidic over the last 200 years due to carbon dioxide absorption from the atmosphere as a result of human greenhouse gas emissions. What’s more, seagrass is declining, coral is dying and harmful algae is booming as a result of pollution and climate change.

The situation is alarming and many in our industry are worried about the future – everyone wants fishing and boating to be an enjoyable experience for future generations.

Within Simrad, there is a cloud software that directly supports the preservation of our aquatic environments.

BioBase (part of C-MAP) is a subscription-based tool for aquatic environmental professionals. It is designed for aquatic biologists, government agencies, and researchers to implement long term monitoring programs related to current and historical vegetation densities, bottom hardness, and other water quality characteristics. It’s the sister product to C-MAP Genesis, a recreational coastal and lake mapping system but with more features tailored to environmental professionals.

BioBase’s EcoSound product processes raw sonar logs from Simrad and based on the acoustic and GPS signals, creates detailed maps of depth, aquatic vegetation abundance, and bottom hardness. In a different way, a second BioBase product, EcoSat, processes very high-resolution satellite imagery to create maps of emergent vegetation and bottom composition maps too shallow for boat-based mapping. BioBase displays data in a clean, cloud-based dashboard and produces useful summary data reports and a range of data/map exports for researchers.

The BioBase team of experts is based in Minneapolis, US and currently, the platform has over 250 active Researchers, Aquatic Biologists, and Lake and Pond coastal managers using it to learn more about the aquatic environments they are protecting.
