Simrad SY60 a new 8-inch Omni Sonar

The new SIMRAD SY60 was launched during the latest International Boat Show at Palm Beach, FL. This is a next generation 360o omnidirectional sonar, designed to deliver a new level of clarity, range, and target separation for demanding fishery operators. Building on the strong foundation of SIMRAD SY50, the new SY60 brings a series of meaningful performance upgrades. Most notably, a narrower vertical beam, greater transmitting power, and a new stabilization system. Combining these enhancements gives operators a clearer picture of the water column from surface to bottom, even in challenging conditions.

A new benchmark in precision and power

  • The SY60’s redesigned transducer architecture produces a noticeably sharper vertical beam of 6,4o, allowing operators to distinguish targets with greater accuracy and track them more reliably near the surface and seabed.
  • Its increased power output of +3db (compared to SY50) improves long range performance and enhances the ability to follow fast moving or dispersed schools.
  • The new stabilization sensor, SteadyPing™, delivers faster and more precise compensation in rough seas. This ensures a stable, readable image at short range, where detail matters most.

Familiar form, elevated performance

While the SY60 shares the compact footprint and intuitive interface of the SY50, it represents a clear step up in operational capabilities. It retains hallmark features such as QuadPing®, Dual operation with independent dual tilt (-10o to +60o) and range, CHIRP and CW transmissions, plus optional AI powered target tracking, but pairs them with a more advanced sonar engine designed for operators who want the highest level of situational awareness. All while still fitting even the smallest vessels using a standard 8-inch sonar installation trunk.“With the SY60, we wanted to give fishery operators a tool that delivers true commercial grade performance in a compact package,” said Martin Tollefsen, Product Manager. “By refining the beam and increasing power, we’ve achieved a level of resolution and stability that was previously out of reach for this segment. The SY60 lets operators see more, react faster, and fish with greater confidence, no matter the conditions.”

Designed for tomorrow’s fisheries

Like the SY50, the SY60 is engineered for straightforward installation on vessels with limited space. All transceiver electronics are integrated into the transducer, reducing cabling and noise while simplifying setup. The system also supports full remote operation, automatic software updates, and optional Sonar-AI driven target recognition. All existing SY50 users can easily upgrade to the SY60 and take advantage of these new capabilities.

Sonar-AI

The new Sonar-AI is an “always-on” Artificial Intelligence sonar operator that detects fish, alerts the crew, and gets smarter every time you fish. It is built by Viam, and it is now deployed on SIMRAD SY50 and SY60 omnidirectional sonars providing:

  • Real time operation – The Sonar-AI works beside you in real time. It detects fish, predicts movement, drops automatic markers, and triggers instant audio alerts the moment a target appears.
  • Fishing history log – The Sonar-AI logs every detection with time, location, and sonar settings, thus building a cloud-based fishing history you can access from any browser.
  • A fishing log that builds itself – The Sonar-AI automatically saves every detection to the cloud with full context. You can review your history anytime, anywhere, and turn past trips into future advantages.
  • Smarter every trip – The Sonar-AI system continuously improves. As it learns your waters, patterns, and behavior, detection accuracy increases over time.
  • Catch more fish – The Sonar-AI identifies targets you might miss, placing markers and sounding alerts instantly—even when your focus is on the deck, the gear, or the horizon.
  • Minimize bycatch – The high‑precision detection provided by the Sonar-AI helps you target species more selectively, protects the ecosystem, and helps you to stay aligned with regulations.
  • Burn less fuel – Find fish faster and reduce time spent running search patterns. Your advantages are more productive water and less wasted fuel.

The Sonar-AI does not require an active internet connection for operation. However, to install the Sonar-AI, upload sonar data to the cloud, and share information, your Sonar Processor Unit must be online. As fisheries continues to evolve, the new SIMRAD SY60 offers operators a powerful new tool to stay ahead of the competition, combining trusted design with the next level of performance.
