Anschütz eLog complies with new Regulations

The new software version for the Anschütz eLog electronic logbook meets the latest format requirements for Ballast Water Record Books (BWRBs), which were recently introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Shipowners can take double advantage of this update, as it not only ensures compliance with the new IMO Regulations but also improves operational efficiency and reduces administrative workload.

The new software version of the Anschütz eLog includes essential improvements designed specifically for ballast water documentation:

• IMO-compliant format: The updated eLog fully meets the IMO’s new structure and data entry guidelines for BWRBs, ensuring that records are correctly formatted and easily verifiable.
• Take-over function: This feature automatically transfers information from former entries, minimizing manual input, reducing errors, and making the record-keeping process faster and more reliable.
• Tank-by-tank feature: The new release includes the required tank-by-tank format, which is generated automatically based on the entries in the BWRB.
• Data validation: The eLog indicates balances and checks for plausible values of the documented ballast water operations.
• Tamper-proof security: Built-in blockchain technology ensures that ballast water records are secure, unalterable, and transparent, preventing unauthorized modifications.
• User-friendly interface: The system is designed for ease of use, allowing crew members to manage and review ballast water entries with minimal effort.
• Remote accessibility: Shore-based teams can monitor, review and report ballast water operations digitally, enhancing oversight and compliance verification.

This update reinforces eLog’s role in ensuring that shipowners are fully compliant with current documentation requirements while maintaining maximum transparency and integrity of their data. The digital capture and use of data improves data quality, facilitates work on board and creates synergies for further use.

The eLog offers the widest range of digital books and reports and is accepted by many major flag states as the full equivalent of traditional paper documentation.

Background: What does the new Regulations require?

Adopted in Circular BWM.2/Circ.80, new guidance is provided on ballast water record-keeping and reporting process under the Ballast Water Management Convention. This includes an updated ballast water reporting form and a voluntary tank-by-tank logging of ballast water operations. Resolution MEPC.369(80) then amended the Ballast Water Management Convention Appendix II with an updated form of the BWRB.

Hence, starting from 1 February 2025, all ships with an approved Ballast Water Management plan must:

• Keep records of ballast water operations in the BWRB in accordance with guidance BWM.2/Circ.80, and
• Apply the new codes A to H together with the specific item number for different ballast water operations, as specified in MEPC.369(80).
