Generic Overlay expands situational awareness

Modern bridge teams rely on an increasing number of sensors and specialized systems. Yet valuable information is often distributed across separate applications and displays, requiring operators to correlate data manually.

With the new Generic Overlay functionality in SYNAPSIS ECDIS NX, Anschütz addresses exactly this challenge. It displays geo-referenced information from external systems directly within the electronic chart, creating a more complete operational picture and bringing relevant information to where decisions are made.

Generic Overlay integrates additional sensor data directly into ECDIS, so navigators no longer need to switch between multiple displays or mentally combine information from different sources. Instead, relevant data is presented in a common navigational context, supporting faster understanding of the situation around the vessel and helping crews make informed decisions with greater confidence.

One common picture for better decisions

Safe navigation depends on understanding the environment as completely as possible. Today, bridge teams continuously assess information from a growing number of sensors and systems.

Generic Overlay brings relevant operational data directly into the chart display, where it is presented in relation to the vessel’s position, route and surroundings.

The result is improved situational awareness, reduced workload on the bridge and a more intuitive user experience. Operators can focus on the situation itself rather than interpreting information across multiple applications and respond more effectively to changing conditions.

FarSounder demonstrates the potential

The first implementation of Generic Overlay integrates FarSounder forward-looking sonar technology. Forward-looking sonar complements charts and conventional navigation sensors with real-time awareness of underwater objects and seabed conditions ahead of the vessel.

This information is integrated directly into SYNAPSIS ECDIS NX and becomes part of the navigational picture. Operators can assess underwater hazards within the same display they already use for route monitoring and navigation planning. This supports earlier recognition of potential risks and greater confidence in demanding operating environments.

Overlay information is not only displayed within the chart but can also be controlled directly through the ECDIS interface. Users can activate, deactivate and configure overlay layers as part of their normal workflow, without having to learn a separate operating concept. The integration demonstrates how specialized sensor technologies can contribute directly to navigational safety when presented in the right context.

Open to future sensor integrations

FarSounder is a powerful first application, but Generic Overlay is designed for much more. It provides an open integration framework for applications and sensors from different manufacturers. Through a standardized interface, external systems can deliver geo-referenced information directly into the familiar ECDIS environment.

This approach creates new opportunities for shipowners, operators and technology providers alike. Valuable information from specialized systems becomes part of the bridge workflow without adding complexity. As new sensor technologies emerge, they deliver more operational value when their information becomes part of a common picture rather than another standalone display.

Advancing integrated navigation

For decades, Anschütz has been committed to helping navigators manage increasing operational complexity through integrated navigation solutions. Generic Overlay continues this approach by combining navigational information and external sensor data within a single environment. The concept supports a clearer understanding of the operational situation, improves collaboration on the bridge and contributes to safer and more efficient vessel operations.

The FarSounder integration provides a strong first example of what is possible. At the same time, the open architecture of Generic Overlay establishes a foundation for future integrations, enabling additional sensors, applications and technologies to contribute to one common navigational picture.

By bringing external sensor information into the navigational context, Generic Overlay helps bridge teams build a more complete understanding of their environment and make confident decisions.
