New OLEX Sounder!

Norwegian based OLEX AS, the manufacturer of complete systems for navigation, plotting and 3D seafloor mapping, is pleased to announce that the hardware for OLEX Sounder OS1 plus the software module required to operate it are available through your local OLEX dealer for an upgrade of your system.

Existing systems will need an update to OLEX version 16.0 to be compatible. By activating this new option OLEX becomes the Sounder’s top end operating software. A window, with adjustable size, appears to the right of the OLEX display. No extra controller or display is required for echosounder operation.

The OLEX OS1 system provides the unique function of building-up a map of the intesity of each fish detection over the years. The main point is not just to provide an onscreen sounder, but to record *all* pings forever, with full water column details. These are shown as coloured tracks with varying intensity according to fish quantities. A slider adjusts the color intensities. The evergrowing fish map is translucent, so that seabed details underneath are still visible. The system provides a user-friendly and practical echosounder while expanding on the fish history and useful statistics. Users click on a spot, and immediately see the pings that made that track, just as in realtime. The skipper can thus see where fish has been and judge where it will re-appear.

Notes:

  • Each ping will occupy around 500 bytes of storage. A full day may produce 100 kB and one year some 3 to 10 So, 10 years of soundings’ history will need approximately 100 GB of system storage.
  • The fish-mapping will be much different from the old WASSP Fish visualization as the OS will build a historic map over the Fish locations, while the Fish in WASSP would disappear after a while.

The new functions of this latest version allow to:

  • Compact user-friendly system
  • Map where the fish has been
  • Predict where the fish will re-appear
  • Adjust fish color intensities between OLEX and Sounder
  • OS1 can use your old transducer; request for compatibility
  • Improve performance of Simrad Combi-C, with 34-42 kHz CHIRP

The technical specifications of the new OLEX Sounder are:

  • Frequency range: 40 to 210 kHz
  • Power input: 10 to 35 Vdc
  • Power consumption: 17W
  • Power protection: overvoltage & reverse polarity
  • Transmit power: up to 1 kW
  • Echogram colors: 16
  • Echogram resolution: up to 400 pixels (vertical)
  • Operating temperature: -20°C to +60°C

The Sounder’s transducers may be choosen from a menu in OLEX. A wide selection is compatible and will be allowed, such as:

  • AIRMAR, various CHIRP & CW transducers
  • RADARSONIC, various CW transducers
  • SIMRAD, Combi 38/200 (CHIRP from 34 to 42 kHz)
  • ECHONAUTICS, various CHIRP & CW transducers

After years of research, development, and testing, OLEX AS has developed and keeps refining the most comprehensive seafloor topography mapping system available on the market. OLEX systems are based on Linux and are considered to be the most stable systems of their kind available on the commercial market. Speed, flexibility, and user-friendliness are important keywords to explain their success.

OLEX can use official and unofficial vector charts, in S57, shape and SOSI format, from Hydrographic Offices and commercial vendors. The navigation charts are displayed alongside the collected seabed data. The chart visualization software will always strive to achieve a clear and informative chart image by preventing the screen from filling up with unnecessary information and display only information relevant to the current zoom scale. Zooming and chart display are fast, easy and seamless.
